Digital advertising tips for startups

In the UK alone, more than half a million startups are formed every year. That's more than 1,200 new companies being formed every day.

Most startups these days integrate digital advertising and marketing from the start. There are many strategies you can employ or outsource to grow your new business.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. Google Ads

Have you ever seen a product image at the top of Google results, or even just the ads above the organic results? If you've ever performed a search on the world's largest search engine, then the answer to this question is yes.

Google Ads is the paid advertising system behind it. The same system is also responsible for the ads you see during your time on YouTube. Would you like your products to appear on one of these? Or maybe a banner on a choice of millions of websites?

The system can be difficult to use and expensive if you have no experience with it. It pays to hire a digital advertising agency to promote your product. The good thing is, since your ads can go live almost instantly, you can start benefiting from advertising from day one.

2. Social Media

Social media networks continue to expand rapidly. Today, Facebook alone made more than $80 billion in advertising revenue in 2020.

Do you want your product to be seen by the 2.7 billion active users? Well, maybe not all, but Facebook Business Manager lets you serve ads (banners and/or videos) to your audience based on multiple demographics, including location, age, gender, and interests. That way, you or the agency running your campaigns can only target those most likely to be interested in what your startup has to offer.

The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB UK) has created guides to help many startups and businesses choose their target audience.

3. Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) has grown rapidly over the past decade. As more and more people gain access to the Internet and its popularity has continued to grow, it has become even more important for your business website to appear in Google results.

It might seem intimidating at first when you think about the fact that your new startup's website ranks at the top of Google for your keywords. But depending on your industry and the businesses in your area, ranking in local results can be a lot quicker and easier than you might imagine. This means you can pick up local sales in the early days of your creation.

A Google My Business page is free to create and relatively easy to set up. This allows you to show up on Google Maps and for local results, especially when your potential customers are nearby and searching for what you offer using their phone.

4. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing asks influencers in your industry to promote your product or service for you and pays them a commission per sale.

This brings advantages for both sides. Influencers may have access to potential customers of yours to promote your product to in order to receive a share of the profits. You can register your business on sites like AWin and ClickBank so their members can sign up and start promoting your service. This is the easiest way to arrange deals and commissions, although you don't want to rule out reaching out to big blogs and social media.
